Catcalling research paper

This study included 11 female participants who journaled for 2 weeks about their catcalling experiences, which included feeling unsafe, blaming themselves, and questioning the legitimacy of the encounter. A preliminary model was developed illustrating the participants’ experiences, reactions, and coping behaviors to being catcalled.

What are often discounted as “jokes” or “compliments” can have consequences for years, sometimes even a lifetime. Growing up with our bodies as constant fodder for public comment affects the way we carry ourselves, the way we dress, and the way we navigate our place in the world.

Made a video of a women walking around NY for 10 showing all the different types of catcalling men do to women. Some believe that the solution to catcalling is to outlaw it completely, or even publicly shaming them. They feel that it is a form of harassment. Other claim that nothing will stop the problem of catcalling.

It should develop media and public education initiatives to change attitudes and behaviors. And change often starts at the top. Elected representatives should demonstrate intolerance for sexual harassment and ensure effective reporting systems and appropriate sanctions for cases within government institutions.
